Nvidia has also revealed the Volta-powered Tesla V100 processor that will feature a massive array of 21 billion transistors and 5120 CUDA cores
The revolutionary Pascal GPU architecture from Nvidia that was introduced last year is having a successor. And like you could expect, the successor, named Volta, is indeed taking over the throne of the GPU architecture kingdom.
Nvidia’s Volta architecture is the most powerful graphics-dedicated computing architecture. It’s designed with a key emphasis on artificial intelligence and for driving the next-gen high-performance computing. The company has also revealed Tesla V100 GPU, the first one to feature the new architecture. The processor will be a data canter-dedicated one similar to how Pascal was introduced back in April 2016 along with the Tesla P100. Nvidia has also shown off DGX-1, the $149,000 deep learning system that will be accompanied by eight Volta processors inside it.
The V100 processor will pack 21 billion transistors along with 5120 CUDA cores that will run at speeds of 1455 MHz. Needless to say that it eclipses the P100, which packs 15 billion transistors and 3840 CUDA cores at 1480 MHz clock speeds. Its effective performance on a GeForce GPU is yet unknown, and we will have to wait until Nvidia gets the wraps off its next series of GeForce GPU cards.
The V100 is also manufactured with a new 12nm FFN technology. That’s a big upgrade, considering that the current 10-series GPU from Nvidia makes use of 16nm technology. This will help the new GPUs achieve a better performance alongside reducing the power dependency by a considerable margin.
With 640 tensor cores inside, the Tesla V100 is designed to accelerate machine learning, and it will be aided by the second-gen version of NVLink technology that features tenfold times the speed of the PCIe transfer speeds. But that matters less when it comes to PC gaming.
Nvidia’s Tesla V100 won’t be available for data centers until the third quarter. Rival AMD is all set to launch its new Vega GPUs along with the data center processor Radeon Instinct this June.
